Winter Woollies

Like I have loads of time on my hands.... I've suddenly developed an I-want-to-play-with-yarn obsession. Blogland has a lot to answer for, methinks.

On Saturday afternoon, the wee girl and I stopped in at Spotlight and stocked up on all we needed for a bit of knitting, crochet, french-knitting and pom-pom-making.

I'll save the kiddie-craft for another post (it truly deserves it). For now we're going to talk about the two crochet hats I made by... ummmm... 2am Sunday morning.

You could say I was hooked. Just making stuff up as I went along, marvelling at how quickly things came together. Enjoying a new medium for an old theme.

By Tuesday morning (2.20am....) there was another hat and a little scarf (and a lovely sit and chat with some real crochet experts).

By 11pm Tuesday there was a knitty scarf. (Big needles, slubby yarn, small neck-warmer-ish wooliness.... and so much instant gratification that I doubt I'll take it off all week).
I lost interest in knitting and crochet when I was about 14, so my skills are basic. I can't read a pattern and have no idea about the terminology of woolly-craft-language, but I think I'd like to learn more.

No doubt, you'll see more of the fuzzy stringy stuff around here.

1) join up at Ravelry.com it's a great resource, like PR for knitting and crochet, forums, reviews and the rest.

2) don't join up at ravelry.com,if you do you will never see daylight again and will develop stash envy right, left and centre

What an overachiever you are - just fiddling about usually results in a woolly mess that isn't fit to be seen in public, not something you'd see in a boutique!

Nice!

Cheers,
AJ
(who just might be on ravelry herself.)

Oh, my! For such beginner skills it looks like you know how to make loveliness with needles and the fuzzy stringy stuff.
Looking forward to seeing more....

If you're a beginner, I may as well just give up trying to crochet!! I somehow just can't quite get it .... and I've been trying to teach myself for 6 months now! Oh well.

Don't you start I have been avoiding blogs with any mention of knitting, crochet in case I open that ugly can of worms again. In fact my daughter wants me to teach her how to crochet and I have been avoiding it because 2 minutes will be all she is capable of and I will be the one starting up and I HAVE NO ROOM IN THE SEWING ROOM FOR ANOTHER HOBBY...drawing a big fat line in the sand here.

Oh hooray! Its so comforting to know that I'm not the only weirdo staying up to ridiculous hours at night to play with the wooly stuff. Just one more row...have fun.

At least this type of sleep deprivation leaves you feeling tired BUT looking good! Love the scarf Nikki.

Now that's my kind of knitting! I can't read a pattern or talk the language either.

There's really no stopping you is there! Once you take something on you really through yourself into it - I love it!

I'm on Ravelry too, and agree that it can be VERY addictive.....

Nikki, your little girl is so lucky! Some of my favourite memories of growing up are the rare occasions where Mum would sit down and do crafts with me. I was always begging her to do stuff with me!

I think she'll have very fond memories of her childhood :)

Anyway, enjoy the knitting and knotting - you'll have some lovely winter woolies at the end!

Rather impressive for someone with 'basic' skills!! I love your scarf pin, too! I need something along those lines for my wrap vest...

I too blame some talented bloggers for setting me on the path to ruin...er...I...mean distraction...I have far too many quilts-in-waiting, yet all I'm doing is knitting.

It's the cold weather makes us do it! I never thought I'd crochet or knit until a few years ago. Now I find both can be incredibly relaxing (or incredibly frustrating, depending on the number of small helping hands about, or number of dropped stitches!) Both are quite sociable and portable crafts as well :)

I swore I was not starting a new crafty hobby, but each winter I end up making a few more scarves. That is where I draw the line though - straight scarves.

Well done with making a hat - you are much cleverer than me - I only admire crochet from afar.
