All manner of merry

Merry Christmas to all who celebrated it today.
Santa brought a new Elna mini sewing machine to the wee girl.  There was much excitement (and pre-breakfast sewing).  The machine goes at a pace that a 6-year-old can manage and has a small range of simple stitches, but is otherwise a normal sewing machine.  (It appears that Santa is in on the indoctrination campaign.)
Before breakfast, she whipped up a teddybear (of her own design) for a toddler cousin....
...which gave me time to finish a baby hat (from my book) and a pair of shorts for a baby boy, who previously received non-gender-specific-verging-on-girly handmade gifts from me.  I thought his Dad might appreciate something screamingly "BOY".
And then it was time for an extended family (in-laws) lunch.  Great to get the family together....
Although, I must admit to being somewhat worried about the way that cousins play together these days.....
My girl was the only one who didn't own an electronic gizmo, so was loaned one, which she tired of quickly and then went out to hold court at the garden table.  I took the opportunity to photograph the new dress.  (I'm working on some new pattern ideas along these lines.  This was the first toile).
And then there was food.  LOTS of food.  And family and kids and presents and more food.  Lovely.
And then Melbourne did what Melbourne does best..... turned on a complete change in the weather (with a super-cell hurricane storm and massive hailstones thrown in... or machine-gunned in, as it seemed).
To top off the day, my little sewing girl went straight back to the sewing machine when we got home early this evening.

Having finished her second cushion for the day, she began making "a library bag" for me.  As bedtime loomed, I allowed her 15 minutes extra to finish... and THEN remembered that we hadn't eaten dinner.  When I suggested she choose from the leftovers, she enthusiastically started looking through the fridge.  I then added that the time it takes to eat something would mean that there'd be no time to finish sewing.  She was sitting back in front of the machine (fridge door left swinging) before I could finish my sentence.  "Then I'll just do more sewing!"

That's my girl.

ha, she's her mothers daughter alright! That present sounds like a winner. We had 4 cousins playing together today and there was a happy absence of electrical devices and we did cloth and paper marbling, played games, swam, played snooker...all good stuff. I know that that's how kids 'play together' often these days- but I am an old fashioned gal, and it just doesn't seem right to me!

excellent gift. what a girl.

bit worried about the malnutrition that might result ;-P

That dress is a really lovely length on her, very grown up looking - in a good way!

Cheers,

Heh, Santa's definitely onto something, though the supermarket may be less enamoured of the drop in food buying as a consequence ;o) Love the wee bear she made, well done to her!

What a wonderful Christmas gift! While all these electronics are fun they can suck out any energy a growing child needs to put towards creativity and sociability. Your daughter is on the right track!

Gotta love when Santa is in on the indoctrination thing.

I'm all for that kind of indoctrination. Yay Santa! And I was pleased to read that she didn't have an electronic device of her own and that she quickly became bored with the one she was given on loan!

I can remember sewing clothes for my Cindy doll when I was a little girl on an Elna. My 11 yr old daughter loves to sew on my old machine, it's a great skill to have.

It warms my heart to see the little one at the machine. I so hope she continues. I remember my DD at 6 sewing on my machine but now, alas, at 16 there are more important things. Like computer games. :(

Happy Christmas Nikki! So lovely to see that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree - what a wonderful gift for the little one, and how lovely that the first things she decided to sew were gifts for others!
Have a wonderful New Year .... I look forward to catching up with you and introducing you to our new family member (who is currently still a rather large and active bump)...

I bought a version of that machine a couple of years back with the idea of using it as my mobile sewing machine but it is just too slow. BUT I did think that it would be perfect for the littlies and my 6 year old son and I are going to play with it over summer.

Heard about the doozy of a storm that you had. Hope that the hailstones weren't too big at your place to damage anything.

Merry Christmas Nikki.

I am sure that sewing machine is going to bring many hours of creativity.

I hope the hail didn't do too much damage at your place.

Good on old Santa....and good on your wee girl....would love to know the model number as my own niece was given 2 sewing kits for Christmas....although both VERY different...but am thinking about teaching her to sew on my machine...but think one of her own for next birthday would be great idea...

A six-year-old sewing? That's amazing! I wonder what else she can do as she grows older. I hope she continues to practice this talent as time goes by. You must be proud to have a talented child.

My squid got a janome the same as that for her 5 or 6th birthday. She has now graduated to a 2nd hand Janome. We tended not to follow the instructions on how thick fabric we put through it and eventually killed it but it was a great learning machine for a couple of years.

Looks like the perfect Christmas day to me. The rain was incredible but it was still warm. Love your 12th birthday cake. I don't remember mine ever looking as good as that one.

Hi! I found your blog as I was looking for reviews of this Elna machine. My daughter is begging for a machine for her 5th birthday, are you happy with this one? I really appreciate any feedback you can give me (good or bad). And now I'm going yo need to trawl through the rest of your blog, it looks great!
