Alien Craft

Today, I reminded myself of someone I once knew, who'd read a bit of Ibsen and Chekov and fancied he could write a play.....

I was hoping for some sort of divine gift to descend upon me, enabling me to throw about a few scraps and turn it all into an amazing design that blended surprising mixes of colour and print. Hoping that I'd somehow channel a bit of Annie's talent.... but it wasn't to be.

It was all a bit simple and safe. And small. And wonky.

There'll be no quilt top here. The project is bag-related.... but I felt like a fraud, plastering these hacked-together bits on the front of a bag when there are so many talented quilters around.

So, just in case anyone looks too closely at my handiwork, I've embroidered (and I use the term loosely) a little message....

This quilting lark is completely foreign to me and I can safely say that I am not a natural quilter. I think I'll leave it to the experts and concentrate my "learning" energies on the yarny stuff.

Scarlet Starlet

Just before I jumped on that train to Sydney, I finished off this little Mod.
The fabric is an upholstery weight suede-look microfibre, which was 40% off its original $20 per metre price-tag in a recent Rathdowne Remnants sale (and it took much less than a metre). Fashion for less, I tell ya!

I used 52mm squared edge o-rings on the two shoulder straps and a 38mm ring as a weight on the flap. The long ring-pull zips are still coming in handy - a perfect match!

Inside the flap is a bit of Patty Young dazzle.

...and the lining is more of the same, with zipped and compartment pockets.

She was a bit of a hit in Sydney - I could have sold her a thousand times. She'll probably be strutting her stuff at the Melbourne Quilt and Craft show in a few weeks.

EDITED TO ADD: Yes, I do have the pattern for sale. The links are highlighted in pink and will take you to all the relevant pages in the shop. Failing that, CLICK HERE.

Good in a crisis

I am. I'm a lateral-thinker. A problem-solver. A survivor.

It's probably because I get SO MUCH practise with it... what with
my life being a litany of Things Going Slightly Askew, and all.

People who know me will say that perhaps if I wrote lists or did one thing at a time, or was generally less chaotic, things would run more smoothly ...but sometimes, things just HAPPEN.

My week at the Sydney Quilt and Craft Fair was a perfect example of this.

Monday's crisis: Volcanic ash cloud. No lists or tidy workroom could have saved me.

Lateral thinking: At the first whiff of a cloud over Adelaide, I was packing my bags in Melbourne and running for the nearest railway station. Somewhere during that long 12-hour overnight journey to Sydney, I received a text message to say that my Tuesday morning flight had indeed been cancelled.

Result: Although sleep-deprived and grumpy, I arrived in Sydney on Tuesday morning, in time to set up my display. My sister (who was also booked on the same Tuesday flight) arrived Wednesday morning.

--------------------------------------------------

Tuesday's crises: Lost credit card (found later in the week on my desk back in Melbourne, where I'd left it mid-parking-fine-payment, when I dropped everything to jump on a train. Shame I'd cancelled it before it was found...and before I remembered to pay the parking fine). Dead phone battery and no charger for it. Publisher trying to contact me to deliver books for the show. Me, trying to contact the publisher, my sister (my helper for set-up and the show), the bank and my office (to see if my credit card was on my desk). No help to set up the enormous display.

Ok, I admit it - a bit less multi-tasking and a bit more list-writing might have saved me on the credit card and phone front. But give me a break... I was running for the one train that would get me to Sydney in time to set up.

Lateral thinking: I bothered the staff at the exhibition centre for a phone every hour or so, found a bank in the street and cancelled the credit card, stayed late and got in early Wednesday morning to finish setting up the display. I finally found a charger to borrow and found out that my sister was on the way... on the bus.

Result: I slept (guiltily.... thinking of Leonie on the bus) on a soft and comfy hotel bed, only having had one moment of near-complete-meltdown during the day. Ready for business on first day of the show.
My hanging mobile of Tulip Dresses and children's accessories received a lot of attention, which was good because it'd taken some serious lateral-thinking to work out that little corner of the stand.

The books arrived, and sold so well that I needed a second delivery before the weekend. Despite two boxes of them having had a rough courier ride, there were still enough undamaged copies to get me through the show.
"You Sew, Girl!" , the book, was well-received. I even had people who had bought it elsewhere coming up to thank me for writing it. That was nice.

Then I lost my voice. And my right eye swelled up (some sort of bite between my eyelid and brow). Luckily, I had the best bunch of helpers I could have asked for and they did an amazing job. Many thanks to Leonie, Cass, Peta, Gay, Nicole and Fiona for keeping the show on the road. This morning's crises were mere trifles... trying to exchange about $400 worth of $1 and $2 coins before banks opened and my flight was due to leave. My bags were overweight. I got up extra-early and managed to swap coins for notes with various vendors about the airport and then checked in.... only to have the flight delayed until midday. My bags were still overweight but the check-in girl didn't notice.

I got home and I'm happy to be here.

I can't say that I enjoyed my week in Sydney, but I did enjoy being at the show itself. I enjoyed meeting new people and catching up with old friends. I enjoyed seeing people enjoying what I do. I'm also glad that my history of dealings with badly-aligned planets, chaos and disorganisation stood me in good stead for all that was thrown at me. I'm glad that I survived.

Ok. Melbourne Quilt and Craft up next.

Quilt Show

Well, I got here (eventually) and got set up (eventually)....and have had two days of show and tell so far. I'll be here for three more days.I'll be back with more details when I have my brain back in working order.

In the meantime, if you're in (or coming to) Sydney, pop in to see me at stand K41 at the Quilt & Craft Fair in Darling Harbour.

And don't mention that cloud of volcanic ash.

Biggest Afternoon Tea

The lovely Cathie hosted a "Biggest Morning Tea" at my studio today, to raise funds for the Cancer Council. She did it with loads of style and deliciousness....
Gorgeous gifts were raffled...Craft books were riffled... (GOTCHA, Bec!!)

And the finer points of patchwork skirts were discussed. (You can spot a group of craft bloggers anywhere!!)

Cathie did an AMAZING job to coordinate and cater for the event. Lots of wonderful people chipped in with prizes and donations, 30-plus women came along to enjoy the afternoon and nearly $900 was raised. Great day!

Been sewing.....

It's quite theraputic....rewarding.... I should do more of it....

It has a flap and a belt tie detail on the bag, and I made a tie on the back as well.

The lining was kept quite simple, with a zippered pocket and a compartment pocket. The bag closes with a magnetic snap. And I finally found the perfect zip for the leather and wool Large Slouch. In fact, I had to buy a box of assorted zips to find this one, so we now have a few of these lovely "ring-pull" numbers in our LONG ZIP bundles..... I'm quite fond of it.... and must remember that it is a display model (not to be used and trashed by me).
A also made another Draped T-Dress....
This time, in HALF-scale.... (Yes, that's a pen near the base of the stand).

And.... just because it amused me....I made a half-scale Mod bag.

Hopefully there'll be a few more new samples to pack in my luggage to Sydney next week....

New bags for the Sydney Quilt & Craft Show

I took a few quick snaps between finishing touches and packing them off to Sydney..... I'm enjoying making up my old patterns. As much as I love the design process and experimenting with new ideas, there's something nice about being able to whip something up, knowing that the pattern is just going to work.... and it's simply a matter on invisaging the fabric and styling and making it happen.

This Large Tote/Satchel and the (...ahem...rather badly styled for the photo) 150mm purse frame purse were made using a scrap of semi-felted knitting I picked out of the "free" basket at the Fibre Red Garage sale a few months ago. I'm not sure how the little circles were made in the knitting (tie dye? bleach?) but I really like them. (I just wish I'd stuffed something in the purse, or fluffed it into shape before I'd photographed it....)

The black poly-viscose faille on the tote was from Auntie Wilma's stash. (Who says you have to spend lots of money on fabric....?)
I've also been having some fun with some new Saffron Craig fabrics. (Ok, sometimes you have to buy special stuff!)
I made the Laptop Bag using a few 50cm lengths of fabrics from the Magical Lands range and some sort of hard-wearing polyester fabric (origin unknown) from the stash. In fact, the cut, fused and half-sewn Laptop Bag pieces were in the stash... the bag was started 3 years ago with a completely different fabric range in mind for the feature panels. For one reason or another, I never got around to finishing the bag until this week, and by complete chance, this range worked beautifully with the colour of the pre-cut pieces.
A little bit of the "Imaginary Flowers" range made it into the lining, for the expandable pleated pocket. Today I finished a Carry-All in more fabrics from Imaginary Flowers... photos to follow.

I still haven't finished the leather and wool bag (spanner in the works - despite having a zipper stash that has to be seen to be believed, I had to BUY a suitable zipper)....

Stay tuned! More to follow!

Oh.... did I mention we had a workshop last Saturday?

In the blur of my working day and night and running around in circles, I forgot to blog these pictures of Saturday's Bag In A Day class. And the only reason I thought of it just now was that I forgot to bring my camera home to download and blog the latest photos of bags that were packed off to Sydney today. Cue PLAN B blogpost....

So... on Saturday, we had a great bunch of gals from Sydney, Griffith, Canberra and Ballarat (first time ever - no locals!) all picking up as many bag-making techniques as they could squeeze into 6 hours. The weather was even nice enough for a few of us to brave... I mean, ENJOY... lunch on the new balcony setting.

It was, quite co-incidentally, a Bernina-fest. For the first time ever, no other sewing machine manufacturer was represented. (Ok, so 3 of the Berninas were mine, but the others were brought in by proud and enthusiastic Bernina owners). The day was spent in fine company and it was great to see those "AH-HA!" moments hitting home. (When you stop people every few minutes to say "Oh, I can show you a trick here...", that recognition means a lot. Nice to know that I'm not being simply annoying while people are trying to sew.)

QUANDRY OF THE WEEK (in need of helpful feedback)...Do you think I should become a Bernina dealer? I mean, I wax lyrical about Bernina machines because I totally believe in them.... should I be being PAID for it...? Will it make me look insincere and negate all I say and all that I've said in the past..? Will it be ... like... selling out, man....?

Ah yes.. well, I ALWAYS do it like this....

You know when things go a little bit wrong....not quite as well as planned, but you smile on as if everything is as it was meant to be...? Yes, I think I know how the designer of this machine-knitted one-piece "playsuit" feels (...and GOD BLESS that poor model - a true professional!!).

I've had a bit of a week of it. ("IT" meaning serious tail-chasing, multi-tasking-while-I'm-multi-tasking and things going a bit wrong on a fairly consistent basis....) I ploughed on. By hook or by crook, the stock and display for the Sydney Quilt and Craft Fair will be on a pallet at Tullamarine Airport on Wednesday morning, ready to go... New bag samples will be finished and hopefully we'll have worked out why, out of the 4000-odd subscribers to our mailing list, only about 150 actually received the last newsletter..... (After Wednesday, I have nearly a week to pull myself and the shop back into some sort of shape before I go up to the show...smiling...).

Anyway.... somewhere in the middle of all of that, I was supposed to draw the winner of the new Draped T-Dress pattern. I smiled and pretended all was normal while I didn't get around to it.

And the winner is ... MARY! Send us your postal address, Mary, and we'll pop the pattern in the post to you.

I also didn't get around to photographing the new bag samples that I finished this week. I only have the work-in-progress shots of this little adventure....

I had a vision... it involved teaming this lovely grey wool honeycomb-texture knitting sample from one or other of my knitting machine (ahem) learning-experiences. I thought that an inset strip of wool in a mock-crock textured leather would look rather nice (in a handcrafted-meets-slick-urban-design sort of way).I measured things, I interfaced things, I used two layers of the knit to make it nice and spongey. I set up the fancy-schmantzy Bernina with upholstery thread and walking foot and stitched it...... All was looking schmick and slick....

And then I noticed this little opportunity for a design feature.....

So we're leaning slightly more towards the "handcrafted" with this one now. But I like it.
I'd like to get his bag finished before Wednesday, too... along with a whole heap of other organising.

Let's just hope my smile doesn't slip...Years ago, I heard a VERY FUNNY radio comedy song - along the lines of "I always do it like this...", in a toffy English accent, accompanied by piano. The song described people having hugely embarrassing and complicated public accidents, and carrying on with a stiff upper lip. A disasterous downhill run on a bicycle ends with " Oh, I ALWAYS get off like this..." Someone getting all his teeth knocked out explains, "Well, I was GOING to get them out..."

Has anyone else heard this and know from whence it came? If it's on You Tube or any audio file anywhere....? CD?

Winter woollies

Since I felted some of my early machine knitting experiments, I've been seeing little purses....And now, it's not just my mind's eye that's doing the seeing. I made this one using the 90mm purse frame kit. The rose is simply rough-cut circles of felted knitting, stacked on top of each other and stitched by machine, with the fancy-schmantzy "hand-stitching" stitch. (...I know. I'm lazy like that).
In other news, the lovely Karen alerted me to a yarn stash that was being given away in her neighbourhood - she even picked it up for me and delivered it!!!
I was so overcome with excitement when I saw a brim-full box of yarn, I immediately started bagging up my favourite colours and loading up the (potential-moth-egg exterminating) freezer. I only thought to take a photo when I ran out of space in the freezer.

Well, actually, I thought of the camera BEFORE I ate the ice-cream to make space for more yarn in there. (Then I ate the ice cream and forgot about the camera again).
I'm just a little bit jumping-up-and-down excited at the prospect of knitting my way through this lot. I'm planning on expanding the knitting machine repertoire to include Shapes Other Than Rectangles.
I daresay there'll be more felted wool purses made along the way.
