Nearly there!

It's only taken about a year to get back to this design (!!) but the pattern is currently finding its way out to testers, and should be ready to print very soon.

I've been busy writing and sewing.... the same bag design....again and again. It's the way I do things.

Making the bag with gathers, with pleats, with flat piping, corded piping, no piping....

...with one strap, two straps..... different rings...

...making it in monochrome wool and leather and then in super bright and summery Tina Givens prints.
Switching the contrast panels around. Making it all in the same fabric....

Making an adjustable strap with double o-rings....

Changing the direction of the pleats....

And now I understand its construction inside out ...and back again.

My only problem (as always) is that I don't know what to call it. The working title has been "that panel bag"... but I think that moniker lacks the-certain-something that a bag pattern ought to have.

I'm open to suggestions....

Anyhoo - GIVEAWAY TIME! I'm going to give away a free pattern the day we release it. Leave a comment here - with either a name suggestion or an indication of which one you'd like to see on the cover (I have my favourite, but I'm always interested to hear from others). I'll get Mr Random Number Generator to pick a lucky winner.
EDITED TO ADD: Please know that unless you have your email address listed on a Google profile page (or have a blog where I can leave a comment) I won't be able to contact you if you win. You can leave your email address in the comment box or WATCH THIS SPACE for the announcement of the winner, and contact me then.

The pattern is written with basic sewing skills in mind. Explanations are super-clear and illustrated, and the design looks more complicated than the construction actually is.

I very much like the first photo (black with colour inset panel). Very striking. But the bottom blue floral combo is pretty spesh too.

At first thought "The HoldAll Bag" but that's very functional and a bit plain jane and I think she is a bit more refined than that.

I'll keep thinking.....

I'm useless with names. So I'll say that I think the black one should go on the cover (with the chez moi print panel?) as I think it best shows the contrast panel. In the other fabrics that feature is less obvious. They all look great, the only fabric (just the fabric, not the bag!) I don't like is the one with the auricula print. How I can remember the names of flowers when I can't remember what day it is, I have no idea.

Auricula - very popular with the Victorians (!) they used to be displayed on stands called Auriculum Theatres. So my stream of consciousness leads me to... Theatre for the bag name. Ooh and the centre panel is like the stage with the sides being the curtains.

Told you I was useless with names!!

Cheers,
AJ

This looks really cute - I can see myself using it on day out with the girls, or on a date to help jazz up an outfit.
I was thinking maybe something like 'Girls night out' bag but that might be a bit of a mouthful :)

Nancy said...

I thought of the "summer swinger"... not sure why..

it's very cute..

My favorite version is the first one--the black solid with the print panel. Grown up, but fun!

I love the one with tina givens or the wool and leather one!

I love the blue bag (fourth photo down) but unfortunatly have no idea what to call it as I am useless with names....but I would really love to make it and see how it turns out!

If only you had an 'arty print of a nearly-clad, nekkid lady with some futuristic/fantasy sort of background' print you could use on the exterior and then you really could call it a 'Panel Bag'. Hahahahahahahahahaha - oh? Only me laughing then. OK.

Sue said...

OMG!

I LOVE this bag, it is just perfect!!! Its the style I have been wanting to make :)

Picture for the cover: the first one, it shows the detail and structure/shape/lines of the bag really well.

As for a name....... "Weekender" ?

I cant wait to get this one and start sewing, dont make us wait too long for it ;)

Dot said...

Name? Design Me. Know its crazy name, but with that pattern using different fabrics, different patterns, and different gathers/pleats gives the bag maker the ability to " design " her bag.

Like this, want to order.

Love the bag!! Why don't you name it after your best friend or someone you love very much?

Tania said...

Nameless, I'm afraid. This one hit crafting wonder, is speechless at the amount of inside out and back to fronting you've been doing. I always knew you (rightly) tested to the nth degree - sheesh louise - that's a lot of baggage. Seriously gorgeous baggage, mind you.

debcquilts said...

How about "Rachel"? The "Rachel" bag?

ambette said...

Oh god, I'm useless with names so I don't have any suggestions at the moment, I'm afraid.

I think my favourite version is the one with the wool and leather. It looks nice and sophisticated!

Bethany said...

I like the wool and leather one for the cover--I don't always think of those as materials when I'm making bags (I usually stick with cotton prints) so just seeing those might instill some inspiration. I also love the all-one-fabric version but it doesn't showcase that center panel as well. Adorable pattern, by the way :)

Georgia Peachez said...

This is a really attractive pattern, this really appeals to me! The pink/yellow one is my absolute fav! I'm looking forward to this pattern coming out. xo, suzy

Danielle said...

did someone say "basic" and "super-clear" instructions?? pick me!!
it took me 5 days to namke my daughter so you can imagine how good i am with names.. she is "Piper" is that works!
i like the first design and the leather one best...

The monochrome wool and leather designs would be great for the cover just because you can really see the detail. I think a great name for the bag would be "Options" since you have so many options with this bag. Diane

Kathy P said...

Love this pattern! How about "Panache" (or Panash if you want to play with the spelling)? The definition certainly fits the purse, in my opinion!

"dashing style: a sense or display of spirited style and self-confidence"

I like the first picture the best - it really highlites the center panel and the pleats show up well.

Gill said...

I'd choose the green bag - gorgeous fabric but really any one of them would look good!
I'll be interested to hear which is your favourite!
Gill

Annie said...

I love the leather and wool - what about "Office Girl"

Doris said...

I like both the green and light blue ones best, but I think they are all beautiful.
Wouldn't it be possible to do a split picture for the cover - several bags all at once?
The only name I can think of is "Pure Fun" which doesn't indicate that it's a bag at all and, therefore, probably useless. But, then again, I'm not in PR.

Abigail Leigh said...

I love the first one and the one using Tina Givens fabric!!!! Such a cute style!!!!

A said...

Definately the Tina Givens Fabric bag. Wow, that one is gorgeous! I cant wait until this pattern is available, its so my style of bag!!

Unknown said...

The top photo best illustrates the panel contrast potential at a quick glance.

For a commodious tote it sure is elegant and stylish.

Catherine said...

maybe "the adaptable bag" to reflect all the possible variations? I like the green one best, but all are great!

Katherine said...

Nikki, you're genius. I love it when you take a design and mix it up with all those different details (piping, pleats, panels, bag hardware etc.) Makes this bag a chameleon - classy or casual depending upon the fabric and details. Love it! I suppose chameleon isn't a very sexy name for a bag though...lol
Hmmm... the first version shows off the panel, but the last photo also catches my eye because of the pretty fabric. You make it hard to choose just one, you know. Fabulous!

Serena said...

I agree with everyone who says the first one showcases the design of the bag the best. It's a beautiful design, by the way. I love it!

As for names, I'm useless at 'em, so I kind of like The Panel Bag.

Buy Design said...

I'm picture no.4 The blue floral one. With adjustable strap. I do like bags with shorter straps but living in Scotland it gets a bit cold quite often and short handled bags just don't fit over tee-shirt, fleece and anorak.
When my daughter was wee a big girl called Katie gave her a gold shiney bag which was forever called 'The Katie Bag'... Good name ??

Ooty said...

Beautiful designs!! Love the bag, and lobe your instructions =0)

I was thinking about names in my head and than my little one said: where is MY KIND OF BAG =D (this is how she named her fave one) so why not I am thinking
"MY KIND OF BAG" / "YOUR KIND"
=)

THANKS FOR THIS GIVEAWAY!

Patty CaSandra said...

wow i love all of them but my fav is the wool and leather

snuzal said...

I like the first one, the black suede look with the bright contrast panel. I looked at that picture and went, I have to have that pattern!

rachandcarl said...

definately the last picture of the bluish one. i think it should be called the runaround. looks a great size fro grabing and runnig around town.

Toni said...

I love the 4th one down, but the top one would be good for the cover.
How about Spring Swing?

I think the top one would be a really great one for the cover!

Gypsy said...

I think the first picture should go on the cover as it shows the contrasting panel...but my fave is the green flowery one 3rd from the bottom!
What about 'The Everyday Bag'?

seabreezequilts said...

Must say I am useless with names, struggle with names for my stuff. But what about the Sew Versatile Bag.

lolliegirl said...

Oooh, decisions... My pick for the cover would have to be the green one. It looks so fresh and fun.

I'm not very good at choosing names but for some reason 'Socialite' came to mind.

Good luck deciding!

Fiona said...

I love the wool / leather one - very stylish!

As to names, this shape reminds me of your mod bag, so maybe you could find a name that refers back to the mod bag. Pleated mod bag, maybe?

Jennie said...

Oh I love it! And am kicking myself for being too busy. :-)

My favourite version are the first one, which shows off the bag's features very well, the wool & leather and the one with orchids.

I'd call it the Sally Forth bag, the Esteem bag (ooh - coz it's for basic sewing skills but looks amazing) or the Brunch bag.

Anonymous said...

they all look gorgeous but my favourite is definitely the last one! look forward to the pattern being released :-)

Jodie said...

Oh I love this bag!!! My fav pic is the first one.

Anonymous said...

I love all the prints but my absolute favorite is the 4th one down. I love the blue and the dots. scrumptious. I do also love the wool and leather one.

Name: The Adaptabag

Love the green bag!! Maybe it could be called the chameleon.

Sophie said...

I have no ideas for a name... no very helpful huh...but I do love the blue one for the cover pic (the last pic). I also really love the green one but the blue shows off the contrast panels better - IMHO!! :)

they all look gorgeous but my favourite is definitely the last one! look forward to the pattern being released :-)

The Peplum Purse, due to the way it's gathered below the upper yoke.

ambette said...

Kathy P's suggestion just made me think of "Pendulum Purse" because I can imagine someone walking along with it in their hand, swinging it as they walk.

bec said...

My faves are photo no 1 and no 3. what a great pattern, I'm getting it for sure! A freebie one would be better wink wink. I'm not good at bnames, buit will suggest 2, just to be different- the 'Rebecca' bag or the 'Sibella' bag! Can't blame me for trying, can you?

Tas said...

I'm a sucker for cherry blossoms so that gets my vote. But I suck at names, sorry!

Melanie said...

They're all lovely! The design reminds me of an empire line dress... maybe 'Empress'?

rachelmp said...

This one will be coming home with me! My imagination is gone after this week at work and the school holidays to start. How about olé for happiness and excitement, social media, as its the word of the week, or Maya, because I am bias :)

KarenJ said...

As much as I love the Moda Blush fabric, I have to say I think the wool and leather bag would look great on the front of your pattern - it really shows up the different panels on the bag, and looks classy as well!

I LOVE the gray one, but I love gray in any way, shape, or form. =) I also like the first one. As for names?

Um....the T and pucker purse? (the shape formed in the center plus the side gathers)I'm terrible at names, but I do love the purse!

Mrs. Joanz said...

LOVE them all but I think the 2nd one (pink w/yellow) is one that will attract all age groups. Really "hip" w/today's trends...Pick me, pick me! Aloha!

Anonymous said...

I like the wool and leather bag and the last one. As far as a name I have no idea.
Maddy

Nic said...

The first bag is ace. The coloured panel really stands out against the dark fabric. Names are tricky things. How about "Jasper?"

Abbington said...

The Jellybean? The shape of the base just reminds me of a jellybean, somehow. I like the blue/pink fabric bag with the pink piping for the cover shot.

Anonymous said...

I can completely understand how difficult it is to decide between all those gorgeous bags! My favourite is the 4th one down (the light blue one), I think, but they all look great! =)

Karen said...

I think it has to be the 'Every Girl bag" because every girl needs one and there is one in a style/colour to suit every girl.
I love the second last one for the cover - lovely and bold, or the last one (though I prefer the colours of it in the fourth shot - they look stronger!).
Unbelievable how many you make Nikki, wow!

Caroline said...

Hi Nikki - amazing how many of us come out of the woodwork for a competition!

My favourite is the first one, looks so stylish with the black and a panel of fab fabric. Second is the blue flowery one.

And when asked to help out with a name...my daughter's suggestion was "Mummy's bag"...not especially helpful but I'm not sure I can do much better!

Cheers, Caroline

Susan said...

I love the fourth design with the piping and pleats. What about calling it "Jazz". Susan

LissyLouLou said...

The black and the tweed version would provide a colour contrast image for the pattern cover. As for a name..... maybe the 'Julia' in honour of Ms Gillard's achievement this week. And the black and tweed would complement her red hair fabulously.

Unknown said...

The first one should definitely be on the cover.

Fer said...

"Bag a go-go"?? Sorry, that's the best I can come up with!

I really admire your tenacity and attention to detail. :)

Kathy P said...

Here'e a few more that popped to mind overnight:
Marquee, Remix, Combo, Medley, Metro, Urban.
Plus there's one more that got lost in my dreams - I know I liked it, but I can't remember what it was...

Helen Yann said...

It would have to be the aqua and pink print, my fav colours at the moment. keep up the great work.Cheers

momid5 said...

I like the one with the piping best, but I agree with the others , the darker one shows the panel and as a pattern in a shop would have longer shelf appeal; maybe the other pictures could be on the back of the envelope or package?
The name...."Emily" because on a vertical I see a capital "E"
:>)

Anonymous said...

I think the first one is the most striking and different to all the other bags out there.

Vicki said...

I think it is the "Must Have" bag. Cos I am feeling I must have this one!! Being a conservative type of gal, I like the grey wool and leather one best - very professional looking. I would happily take that to the professional office with me.

Nicole from Newy said...

The name surely has to be Bag or Bust....for so many reasons but particularly because if you look at the bag with a sense a humour (photo 7 particularly)it looks like the bust of woman facing forward. Love the bag Nikki regardless of name - in my top three of your range! Favourite is photo 4 with the piping - I am a piping girl at heart

Alissa said...

How about the peek-a-boo bag, because one fabric is peeking out from the other fabric? You would of course need to use one of the contrasting pictures with that name. I like the first one. If I could use the pattern to make that bag, I'd get it in an instant!

treegirl7 said...

I like the fourth one down the most. The piping looks great. As for the name I was thinking Farrah. The bag has a 70's vibe which made me think of Farrah Fawcett and Charlies' Angels.

Lauren said...

I like the first one or the wool and leather one.

Vegan said...

I like the one with the adjustable straps the best - I'm a sucker for a cross body strap!

How about the Yoke Bag? The top panel reminds of the yoke on a shirt pattern, and then you can do all kinds of variations with piping, pleats/gathers, etc. Just like with a shirt pattern.

Rachel said...

My favorite picture is the third one from the top. The green one. I think it highlights the construction details very nicely! I really want to make this bag!!

AS said...

I love the last one! Those colours are just very "me"! I've no idea on names though! I have a hard enough time naming my babies, so I am totally stumped for pattern names!Good luck deciding!

Jos van KloskaCreAtief! said...

I like the tina givens print one!

Louise said...

I love both the green floral version and the grey/black wool/leather bag. Having BOTH on the pattern cover would demonstrate the versatility of the pattern from casual to smart professional. Maybe 'Smart Chic' for the name.

Anonymous said...

Love the design. Stick to the name you have originally thought of :))

jana277 said...

Beautiful is 7. I like green. Name? Summer meadow.

Fulvia said...

I vote for "Bag of bags" because it is the king of bags and because of its many iterations. I give you credit for a great post in which you showed and detailed the different possibilities. Thank you Nikki. Now, all that is left, is for me to win it!

Jan said...

How about the V (is for Versatile) bag? Great design, Nikki, and I love how you got so many different looks from one pattern. You're such a clever cookie!

Christina Lowry said...

My vote is for the lovely green bag. My name suggestion would be Bedouin Holiday, because all those fabrics together like that look so lush and exotic.

:)

Copper Patch said...

Tough choice Nikki, they are all lovely.
I love the Oriental green one and the wonderful wool and leather one. Nice!

Chris Davis said...

The first bag is definitely my favorite-- I am, however, quite atrocious with names...how about "The Perfectly Pretty Panel Bag" (ack! see!)

Fiona said...

My vote is for the 9th photo down (light blue bag).

As to name... I'll leave that up to the experts.

Anonymous said...

Beautiful bag!!!

Would be so nice to be the lucky one...
And I like the last one the best...

Love the bag. My name suggestion is the Dahlila Bag with the last purse on the cover (the one with hearts). I'm usually not a frilly, feminine fan but for some reason I love that bag!!

all the bags are so pretty *_* i think i like the fabric for the 2nd and 6th bag the best. i feel like calling the bag summer breeze >.>

What a great looking bag. It's amazing how changing the fabric and some details give it a completely different look. Why not something like the Good Looker bag? I love the photo with the blue and motifs on it in two photos. Gorgeous. Can't wait for the pattern to be in your shop.

Unknown said...

The gathering kind of reminds me of a baby doll dress, so maybe the Babydoll Bag?

As for which one for the cover; I really like the leather and wool one, and the aqua fabric is really pretty, but I think the green one is right for your patterns. Just the right amount of colour.

Bellgirl said...

My fave is the last one, and my second choice would be the green. The shape reminds me of a flower or fruit, so perhaps the Bud bag, or the Pod. Or the Pouch? The name Campanula keeps popping into my mind, although I'm not sure why- perhaps it's the bell shape in both bag and flower. Here's a pic of one anyway, maybe you can see a connection: http://jlcheype.free.fr/images/Fleurs/Campanula_medium.jpg

Bellgirl said...

JUst reading through the name suggestions, there are so many good ones! My favorites are the Peplum Purse and the Sally Forth bag.

antmee said...

All versions of this bag are excellent! my favourite would be the blue one but for your cover I agree with all the comments voting for the first one because it shows the bag design the best.

As for a name? I would go with naming it after someone you love if you can't think of anything else. Sorry! Not much help there!

Aussie Jo said...

So many great suggestions. I love the almost paisley blue fabric and the first one that looks like suede in the pic.
I don't envy you choosing a name from all those suggestions, mine is "out to lunch"

suitcasesue said...

My favourite is the blue floral bag. They all look great, but this fabric is super gorgeous. nice bag pattern, sorry no ideas for names. I can't wait to try one of your bag patterns when I am brave enough!!!

I do love the combination of the fabrics of the last photo (blue floral bag).

Esther said...

That's really lovely and adaptable I love the one with the leather panel and it shows the design well to but I also love and would probably use a lot the last one with the piping.

Would love to come up with an ideal name but the best I could think of was the Pinafore bag cos the shape of the top and straps remind me of a little girls old fashioned pleated pinafore dress.

jeansdaughter said...

We all love it Nikki! I'm not the best with names, but Shakespeare knew a lot about 'double entendres' so how about the As You Like It bag? As for the cover - how about the tweed/leather number in the centre with thumbnails of the others around the outside!

What a beautiful bag!! Love it. Is femenine but have enough space to store somthing more than your wallet and cell phone.
My favourites to see on the cover are green (oriental fabric) and pink (tina givens fabric). On Tina Gvens bag is more easy to see the central panel, but I love green :)
I believe that the bag's name has to be more focused on shape/use than the fabric used to made it for.
So my name is "Two for one (2x1)"
Because you can make two diferents bags just adding one or two straps and adding more or less lenght (short strap: shoulder bag, lenght strap: across the chest leaving you both hands free, perfect for mommy)
warm regards,

I love the green and blue bags they are so playful and confident. Congratulations on a wonderful design!

Love the new bag Nikki, especially the monochrome wool and leather - can't wait to try it.
Picking a name is hard - what about "cosmopolitan".

AMM said...

I love the version with the two straps in blue. What about calling it the "Julia" to commemorate our first female PM?

Katie White said...

Congratulations! This beautiful bag reminds me of the female bottom so with this in mind...
Caboose, Fanny, Tushie, Bun bag or Derriere. Hind quarters might work with the 3 panel look at the bottom and larger panel across the top. But my favourite is DAYUM. Whenever I see my husbands buns, I think to myself 'day yum' (Damn) I won't some of that! And I definitely want some of this new bag too.

Anonymous said...

I really like the last bag, especially the colours & additional piping. But the first bag definately shows the detail & panel effect with the pleating so would be my pick for the cover.
As for name suggestions ... Pandora or Panelle - a more feminine version of 'Panel'.

This bag would have to be the most complimentary design I have ever seen, all fabrics and combinations just seem to work....my fav for the pattern cover? I can't pick just one, so I suggest a mosaic of 4 different fabric combinations. As for a name....how about The Versatility Bag?LOL

Oooh, they all look great -I think I like the aqua one with piping and reverse pleats best. As for a name, how about the Mixed Grill?

I think all the bags look FANTASTIC! my favourite one (the one I would choose for the cover therefore)is the green one, I love green! I just love how using different fabric in a pattern makes 2 bags from the same pattern COMPLETELY different!

Well done on another fantastic pattern. These bags have a springlike feel to me (perhaps your fabric choices?) so I would call it something like spring fling...

Gosh I'd love one of these!
