Go ask Alice (when she's three feet tall)...

Ask her why her Mummy always leaves costume-making until the last minute before a fancy dress party at kinder.

Ask her why her Mummy spent a VERY late night (after teaching a 3-hour class) and most of a supposed-to-be-busy work day making the dress, petticoat and apron.

And then ask her why most of the other kinder-Mum's didn't dress up their kids for the "FANCY DRESS" Mad Hatter's Tea Party.

Go on - ask her.

She might have an answer.....I don't.

(But I know that - despite standing out like the proverbial injured thumb - she LOVED her costume).

PS. The wee one's name is usually NOT Alice. It was just for today.

  2. I think Alice might say it's because she's got the best mummy. :o)

Your wee girl looks adorable, Nikki.

  3. 'Alice' will remember the special dress and the special day and that is what's important.
From a fellow dress up maker- I'm still doing it and my eldest is 19, it will be the grandkids next.

  4. Well, how disappointing that those other kinder parents missed the fancy dress of the fancy dress party. Not enough fancy dress parties if you ask me- I have very fond memories of being- Jake the Peg (that one got me into the local paper!), Humpty Dumpty (needed to open the double doors at the local hall to get my massive paper mache egg in- oh, and we needed the trailer to cart said costume- a great daughter and dad project, the saucepan man (of Faraway Tree fame) and Pippi Longstocking. Sigh. I am so glad for young Alice that you sleep deprived yourself on her behalf!

  5. Ohh Nikki, wee one would have loved it and when she is a little older she will realise that at least her mum can & wants to do these things and that she definitely is one lucky little girl!

  6. Yes, she probably thought she stood out...... probably because she thought she had the best costume!! Great work Nikki! She looks gorgeous and the most important part of it is that your poppet loved it.

  7. Now that is completely adorable!
She can have Alice in Wonderland tea parties whenever she feels like it now with such a gorgeous costume.

  8. My grandmother was a tailor and made all her son's clothes. When he asked why he didn't have store-bought clothes like all the other kids in elementary school, she replied that she loved him so much that she only wanted the very best for him - clothes she made. Made for an interesting year on the playground! :D

I'm jealous of Alice - I would wear that now!

  10. What a perfect little Alice outfit. If only more mama's were into crafting/sewing - oh well, at least some of us carry the torch.
    Very special.

And the answer to the question why?? Because you love it!!

  16. A perfect Alice outfit!! But welcome to school-life where anything goes!!! At one function one of my girls was supposed to be a cow, and she showed up in a white sweatsuit that I appliqued black 'cow spots' all over. It also included a tail and a hood with cow ears. I thought it was simple and was embarassed at doing so little, yet in the end it was the fanciest costume of the day. For once in my life, I was ahead of the game!

  17. Late night sewing with a deadline - is there any other way?!!

'Alice' was certainly in wonderland. The costume is just devine, and I'm sure will be a fave for a long time to come.

    Well done Nik!!

  18. Too Cute - my most loved costume was exactly the same - my mum made me Alice in Wonderland and even my daughter wore it to her book parades - very precious! Merry Christmas to all!
