Ain't no oil painting

It's been a while since I could turn heads.... but now, thanks to Photoshop, I can cut off the grey and wrinkly bits, smooth over the general turkey-neck area and turn myself into a watercolour fashion illustration.
Who'd a thunk I could be anything more than a beret model..? With my height (or lack thereof), nobody would have picked me as a fashion illustration... but here I am....

...poncing about on the cover of my new Draped Dress pattern. I've lined up some pattern testers (thanks to Facebook and Twitter and no thanks whatsoever to Blogger, which wouldn't let me log in for over 24 hours) and I should have a finished pattern by the end of next week. (All going well).

Throw your name into the pot here (that'd be the comment box) if you want a chance to win one. (Perhaps as a consolation prize if you missed out on winning a copy of my book in Jodie's or Cath's giveaways...?).

Sewjourn weekend

'Twas grand..... A weekend of sewing, laughing, eating WA-HAY too much chocolate and enjoying the company of a bunch of fabulous, generous, talented women (including two blogless gals).

BTW - I've decided that when I grow up, I want to be able to make quilts like Annie.
Although there was much laughter and conversation (and the odd glass of wine), the emphasis was definitely on sewing. The dining room table was mostly re-purposed as a cutting room with my sewing buddy's and my new super-sized cutting mats. There were late nights and finished garments.
I began another textiles-magical-mystery-tour - this time with knitted bits of wool and linen gauze. So far, the road has taken an unexpected turn.... (and I'll return to this story when there is some sort of ending in sight).

Many thanks to my fellow Sewjourners. It was an absolutely soul-reviving pleasure to spend time with you and I'm counting the days until we return.

NEWSFLASH! Did you know that Cath still has THREE of my books to give away??? Sorry if you missed out on Jodie's giveaway (she just drew some lucky winners!).

Numero Uno

...and duo.
I hadn't forgotten about my raffle for the glam pattern... I was just so busy (and then so BLAH) with the AQC stuff that I couldn't find the time or headspace to deal with it. I was also somewhat disheartened that only 2 people donated to the Red Cross to go into the draw. So....I'm sending Jen and Tanya a pattern each.

In other news, I think that the bag-robber inadvertently did me a bit of a favour. Thanks to the super-good people of Blog-and-Facebook-Land, the spread of the news about the bag has had an unforseen effect.....

Ok.... so it doesn't actually mean BEST SELLER*... but it's nice to be at the top of a list! I'm embracing positives here.

* It just means that people are looking at this this page.

Right now, my number 1 priority is to relax and unwind... spend time with the wee girl... see how much chocolate I can consume... stuff like that. The theft of the bag brought up a lot of hitherto unaknowledged grief, stress and exhaustion. For once, I'm not going to plough on through it. I'm going to stop for a few more days.

I've re-started the re-knitted, dyed machine-knitted project. Hopefully this time it will fit someone larger than a newborn.

Oh, and by the way.... If you'd like to learn to knit, why don't you join the Beginners Knitting course that the wonderful Jules is teaching in my space through the winter? We have a lovely warm room (with SIX NEW DAYLIGHT LAMPS.... which I'm LOVING!!!), music, food (and I'm thinking a glass of wine would also be nice...) and conversation with other knitting novices. Jules will be able to give you lots of attention and gently lead you step-by-step to well-beyond-scarf-knitting. Go on.... treat yourself!

Meet the new girls....

I'm in the final editing stages of the instructions for the new purse... getting ready for the final round of pattern-testing (yes, I test and edit and re-test...).
It's a versatile little purse, with the options of a smooth, gathered or pleated finish. It can sit flat like a fan or rounded and barrel-like. It has a 100mm (4") frame but is roomy enough to carry all you need for a special occasion (or coffee date).

You can also choose to add (a rouleaux or flat) wrist strap or handle and there are even instructions for making the strap detachable. The possiblilities for variation are endless and the design is multi-purpose.
I'll introduce you to my crew.
Meet the wedding girls..... all silk and stylish simplicity. The cute and clever crafty chicks.... in a colourful splash of quilting cotton.
The uber-cool urban gals in sleek designer silk satin.

And the school formal (prom/debutante) girls, having a riot in a bit of polyester razzle-dazzle.

Now.... what do you think I'm going to call this pattern? As always, I've chosen a state-the-bleeding-obvious single word title for this one. And - as nearly always - I'm running a giveaway to launch it.
Leave a comment with what you think the name is and you might just win a copy of the pattern when we launch it. I'm sure that more than one person will guess the name, so I'll random-number pick a winner from all correct entries. GOOD LUCK!
*****
Did you know that I give my patterns very basic, descriptive names so that you can impose your own personality and designs on them? I read a comment on a blog once that criticised the lack of flair in my naming of the "200mm Square Frame Purse" and it made me realise that people don't get it.... I leave the space blank so you can fill it with your imagination.

And the Winner is....

... Catherine! Well done all, for your generous donations to flood relief.

Special mention goes to Tanya - who entered several times. I think she deserves a runners-up prize. I'll stick something in the post to you, Tan.

A Laptop Bag for a $5 donation to flood relief, anyone...?

I'm a bit short on time at the moment, so instead of making something specific for the Queensland Flood Appeal auctions, I've decided to add one of my original samples of the Laptop Bag to the prize pool.

It has a pleated gadget-pocket and a compartment pocket.... ..and another pocket on the front. It holds a 15" laptop computer (although I never quite got around to making a sleeve to match the bag) or it could be used as an everyday satchel to carry books and files to work or school. It could also be a nappy bag.
This bag is a smidge smaller than the size the final pattern makes, but it's possibly my favourite of all the samples that I've made. I love the fabric prints (an old range by Timeless Treasures, called Lindsey).

I'm blatantly stealing Jodie's idea of a raffle, because I think that most of us could afford to donate $5, and it makes it possible for more people to donate and take part. For every $5 donation you make to the appeal, you get a chance to be in the draw.

I feel that the postage cost to ship this baby overseas would be better spent on rebuilding flood-ravaged communities, but I'll pay postage within Australia (and you're welcome to pay the difference to your country if you're overseas and really want the bag....).

All you need to do is make a donation to the Premier's Flood Relief Appeal and leave a comment here with your receipt number . If you don't have a Blogger account or if you don't have your email address enabled on your Blogger profile, please leave it on your comment or email me directly on info@nicolemdesign.com.au. I can't contact you (should you win) otherwise.

****
EDITED TO ADD: Slight change of rules.... I'm going to include donations to THE RED CROSS, who have started a fund to assist people affected by the Victorian floods. Leave your receipt number here if you've made a donation.....

If you want an entry for every $5 you've donated, I'm afraid you'll have to have a separate receipt number for every $5, otherwise you can enter once (one receipt number) for any donation over $5.

I'll do a random number draw next (changed to...) WEDNESDAY night. Please don't leave a comment unless it's with a receipt number, as that mucks up the whole random number thingamie.

There are a few other raffles (like this, this and this and this and this...) amongst the auctions, so even if you don't have a large amount to donate, you can make a contribution and still be in with a chance to win a giveaway! Watch Toni's blog for updates....

For those of you in North and Western Victoria... I have everything crossed for you that those floods are not endangering you, your family or your property. My heart goes out to those who haven't been so lucky.

New kid on the block....

I'm working on projects for BEGINNERS...

I know that not everyone can come to a class in Melbourne on a week-night*, so I'm re-working my beginners workshop notes into a self-paced "How to sew" course.

*Yes, I know... they've been thin on the ground lately, ayway...

Beginners Sewing Class 1 is all written up and on its way to be tested by some lovley people. (No pressure, dear testers, but....) I hope to have it all finished and ready to go in about a week or so.

Trivial fact about this bag #1: I've noticed that everyone who makes this bag in a beginners class, subsequently uses it to carry their gear for every other sewing workshop (with me) that they attend. Fancy that.
I think this project would be a good Christmas present for anyone wanting to learn to sew, accompanied by a yard/metre of cute fabric (or a new sewing machine?). Just thinkin'....

The bag is simply the focus of the learning process. The "lesson" takes you through all the sewing processes and jargon you'll need to make it and most other simple projects. And at the end of it, you have a very useful carry-bag (with reinforced straps and boxed corners) and a whole lot of new tricks up your sleeve.

(You may also remember that one year I wrapped my xmas presents in shopping bags instead of paper...? )
If all goes well in the final stages of lease negotiations on the new digs, I will be quickly scheduling some real-life pre-xmas workshops in swanky new premises. Please keep your eyes on this blog, Facebook, Twitter to be kept informed. (And if you're on the mailing list, keep checking your junk mail folder!!).

If you'd like to win one of these beginners kits for yourself or as a gift for someone, leave a little coment here and I'll draw a winner when the kit goes onto the website.

And while you're waiting on that one, here's a sneaky-peek at what's coming up next.

Nearly there!

It's only taken about a year to get back to this design (!!) but the pattern is currently finding its way out to testers, and should be ready to print very soon.

I've been busy writing and sewing.... the same bag design....again and again. It's the way I do things.

Making the bag with gathers, with pleats, with flat piping, corded piping, no piping....

...with one strap, two straps..... different rings...

...making it in monochrome wool and leather and then in super bright and summery Tina Givens prints.
Switching the contrast panels around. Making it all in the same fabric....

Making an adjustable strap with double o-rings....

Changing the direction of the pleats....

And now I understand its construction inside out ...and back again.

My only problem (as always) is that I don't know what to call it. The working title has been "that panel bag"... but I think that moniker lacks the-certain-something that a bag pattern ought to have.

I'm open to suggestions....

Anyhoo - GIVEAWAY TIME! I'm going to give away a free pattern the day we release it. Leave a comment here - with either a name suggestion or an indication of which one you'd like to see on the cover (I have my favourite, but I'm always interested to hear from others). I'll get Mr Random Number Generator to pick a lucky winner.
EDITED TO ADD: Please know that unless you have your email address listed on a Google profile page (or have a blog where I can leave a comment) I won't be able to contact you if you win. You can leave your email address in the comment box or WATCH THIS SPACE for the announcement of the winner, and contact me then.

The pattern is written with basic sewing skills in mind. Explanations are super-clear and illustrated, and the design looks more complicated than the construction actually is.

Falling in love again....

I've been playing around with Vilene S320 for making bags and I'm feeling a bit gushy and besotted again. I particularly like the combination of cotton quilting fabric, S320 and H640 wadding. Structure, flexibility and a smooth flat finish ...all in a lightweight, easy-to-fuse interfacing. I told you I was prone to gushing about it, didn't I...?

I'm also loving this Secret Garden range by Patty Young. It's been in the stash for a while.

Love makes the heart sing.... and makes me feel all generous and giving. I want to share the love around and give everyone a chance to experience the joy that IS Vilene S320.

This week - until 5pm Friday 5th March - we're giving 15% off the price of Vilene S320.
Get yours HERE!

I'm also giving this printer cartridge to anyone (preferably within Australia) who can use it.
Lesson learned - never leave the 4-year-old in charge of choosing the printer ink.... (I know!). She wanted to choose it so I said "No.8 pink -with an M on it". Obviously something distracted me from checking it until three weeks after it was purchased, I'd lost the receipt and damaged the packaging. The one I wanted was 8M - not PM. With no hope of returning it and $26 down the gurgler, I'm happy to see it go to a good home.

Hello to anyone who has come here from the Selvage Blog. Please do feel free to leave your name on the selvedge giveaway post. The stash is building up again after the first round of winners and I'll send more out soon.

On the subject of winners - congratulations to Carol Jones in Texas USA, who won the pattern of her choice in February's "spend over $50" prize draw. This month's draw prize will be a $25 voucher to spend in the shop.

Ain't love grand....?

The Great Divide

There were so many people interested in my selvedges that I felt bad about giving them all to one person. I decided to divide them into "large letter" size lots (vacuum-packed in zip-lock bags) and post them out to a few randomly chosen people. Some of you may have received a bundle (if you happen to be a regular customer) and some may have received an email asking for your address.

I'm in the middle of a huge (but very, very secret) sew-fest, so the selvedge stash is growing daily. I'll keep drawing out names for letter-size bundles until the stash is gone.

I'm sorry but I haven't had time to do any fancy linky stuff about the winners. Believe me - I really have been drawing names out and I really have been sending parcels out.

Table Top Selvedge Mountain

I've been saving selvedges for so long, I can't seem to stop.....even though Jodie has exhausted her interest in using them (with all manner of overwhelmingly amazing projects) and doesn't need any more.

Can anyone else use them...? They're mostly yard, half-yard or yard-and-a-half lengths (and there may be a few two metre lengths too, I think).

If you're inspired by Jodie and have an idea of what you'd like to make with these selvedges, leave a comment to let me know and I'll send you the bundle. If there are lots of responses I might have to draw names out of a hat.
EDITED TO ADD: Looks like there's going to be a hat involved here....
And while you're over at Jodie's, check out the STUNNING selvedge quilt that some lovely, lovely people made for her special birthday present.

Pattern Givaway Winner

Thanks to everyone who went in to the draw, and special thanks to those who blogged a link.

The Winner is KATE from Fox's Lane! Congratulations, Kate! When you send us your postal address we'll pop the pattern in the mail to you.

This is the Kid's Hat that was used as the barrel. The fabric is Sandi Henderson's Meadowsweet range. It used to have a matching Tulip Dress....

On another - completely unrelated and without segue - point, there appears to be a magnetic catch drought. The next shipment of the 19mm silver nickel snaps we usually stock will be mid-February. To tide us (and you) over, we have these swishy snaps until then. They're a bit more expensive, but rather nice. Prices are the same as the antique snaps of the same quality.

Impromptu button hole gauge... and a giveaway!

Visiting my parents on the weekend was looking a bit tricky because I had a lot of Tulip Dress sewing to do. Solution: do both. I can talk and sew, and drink tea and sew. No problem.

While two of my older sisters sat neatly with their embroidery, I spread out with sewing machine, a pile of dresses and bags of buttons and threads. (In other words, assumed the position of my 16-year-old self on the kitchen table). The one thing I forgot was a tape-measure.

..but placing buttonholes is not a problem when there are paper napkins around!

Who needs a button hole gauge...? (...well, actually, that's the next gadget on my list!).
The Tulip Dress is in its final stages. See my Flickr page for a few more pics. You might also start to see some pattern testing pics popping up on a few blogs. Here it is at Matching Pegs and two versions at Thornberry. It's also here at My Black Cardigan.

If you'd like to go into a draw to win a pattern for yourself, leave a comment here. I'll draw the prize when the pattern is ready to go up on the website. For a second chance at the pattern and a chance to win a yard/metre of fabric from my stash AS WELL, you can blog about it and leave another comment to tell me you've linked....

If you have any stories about improvised sewing gadgets, I'd love to hear them, too (not a rule of the giveaway.... just for fun!).

Which brings me to the monthly spend-over $50 prize. This month's prize will be ALSO be a copy of the Tulip Dress pattern - hot off the press! All invoices over $50 for the month of January will be going into the draw. So... a few chances to WIN WIN WIN!
EDITED TO ADD - Thank you - the draw is now closed!!
